Chris Sancomb
2025 Summer FellowChris Sancomb is an interdisciplinary creative whose practice merges artistic and scientific perspectives with design methodologies to explore form, environment, and social interaction. He employs design as both a research tool and a framework for interdisciplinary collaboration, advancing research and development across disciplines.
His socially engaged design practice emphasizes inclusive, interactive, community-based collaborations that raise awareness of renewable energy, expand access to sustainable power sources, and enhance social interaction through aesthetic environmental features in landscape and architecture.
His current artistic research focuses on science visualization, translating data from physics, astronomy, and cosmology into visual systems that depict unobservable phenomena. This work represents an expression of wonder at the elusive magnitude of Space, and serves as a means of inquiry, synthesis, material exploration, and discovery.
As an educator, Chris is currently a professor at the University of Connecticut, where he began a new interdisciplinary program in Industrial Design. His design curriculum is focused on experiential project based learning that emphasizes the potential of design to contribute to broader societal well-being beyond the production of objects.
Prior to transitioning into higher education full time, his design practice was focused on the creation of STEAM themed informal learning environments for science and children's museums. His work in these areas centers on designing hands-on interactive learning experiences from concept development to implementation. Central to his design practice is the belief in creating inclusive, self directed, experiential environments designed to support varied learning styles, promote empathy, and help develop creative confidence in children.
