The IPA operates the only public library on Governors Island, containing publications and periodicals on art, architecture, urban planning and more.

Accessibility

Unfortunately, our facility is not accessible for visitors using a wheelchair. There are ten steps required to enter the main floor of the building.

A bathroom is available for use by the public during our opening hours.

Getting to Governors Island

Governors Island is a car-free urban park accessible only by ferry. Ferries are available year-round from Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Service from Manhattan operates every half hour from the Battery Maritime Terminal (adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry Terminal) in Lower Manhattan. Tickets are required to board. Please see schedules and exceptions here.

The terminal is accessible by these public transit methods:

  • 1 train, South Ferry station
  • R train, Whitehall St station
  • 4, 5 trains, Bowling Green station
  • M15-SBS bus
  • Citi Bike dock adjacent to the terminal

Service from Brooklyn is operated by NYC Ferry on the South Brooklyn route. Tickets are required to board. Please see schedules and ticket information here. During Summer months, additional weekend ferries are available from Red Hook and Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Please see schedules and ticket information here.
