Seed Flowers

Abdus Salaam
2023 Summer Residency

Seed Flowers is a new work by Abdus Salaam that express his African, Western and Eastern roots, sensibilities and spiritual practices. This work is a synergy of sculpture, painting, poetry, nature and history. The form of the work is based on the seed pod of the maple trees that surround the heritage building in which he participated in the 2023 Summer Residency where he focused his work around the ecology and the history of Governors Island.

The geometric repeating patterns made exclusively with a palette knife resemble the transcendent forms found on the inside dome of most mosques around the world and the floral motif that occurs by his linking the multiple seed pod forms as an homage to his farm-life childhood, and the vast art historical context of flowers that saturate every culture’s art history.
