Impressibility Column
Matthew Ledwidge 2022 Summer Residency
Matthew Ledwidge developed “Impressibility Column”, a sculptural-video work researching histories of emotion and mental health in the built environment. Using point-of-view narrative film techniques, the video installation follows a figure whose shifting symptoms and affective conditions emerge in encounters with the built environment. The project explores how health and mental disorders have been historically understood to be linked to the built environment or even incorporated as tools in design practices. Ledwidge speculates on how this might shift in an uncertain future asking: What emotional states are anticipated or imagined at the time of design? How might we conceive of an emotional history of architecture?
