APRIL

Saturday, April 19, 12-4pm ︎EARTH DAY
PROGRAM
TIME

OPEN STUDIO
12:00 - 4:00PM
In-the-studio works by Zachary Schumacher, Josue Bessiake, Amy Cheung, Angel Beale, and Dhruvi Rajpopat.

2:00 - 3:30PM
Participants will design collectible cards representing actors and creatures that depend on elemental forces to survive.
They will team up in a world-making game as the host flips through real-world ecological scenarios cards—plastic-choked oceans, raging wildfires, deforestation, deep-sea mining, radioactive soil, and more. Teams will then enter timed battles to resolve—or escalate—the crisis at hand, strategizing with wuxing principles of mutual generation and restraint (e.g., water nourishes wood, fire melts metal).

This workshop is co-hosted by Fellow Amy Cheung (Artist, Cultural Vitamin Solutions), Dabu Lyu and Herman Fang (NYU Game Center).

*Due to capacity registration is required for this event.

MODUS OPERANDI
3:00 - 4:00 PM
In conjunction with the ongoing construction of a naval structure, this project invites participant to aid in constructing a stage in a ferry-like form using soft materials. Participants ar encouraged to play and let their imaginations run rampant. As they build the stage for the performers, Fellow Josue Bessiake, Leonie Smith & Roger Manning will play tunes and sounds related to the water, inviting guests to dance, play, and let their bodies react accordingly playing the role of audience member and performer.

This project is supported by collaborators Jo Locke, Leonie Smith, Roger Manning, and Musicians of New York Subways.

OPEN LIBRARY
12:00 - 4:00 PM
The IPA operates the only public library on Governors Island, containing publications and periodicals on art, architecture, urban planning and more. Spend some time getting to know our collection.
