in≈sular
Maria Luiza de Barros
2024 Fall Residency
in≈sular is a text-sound-based piece that seeks to evoke the connection between the inside and exterior of our worlds, suggesting a reading of spatialities from the Atlantic South through an investigation of proximities and differences between practices in black diaspora.
At its core, there is a publication of dialogues aimed at sharing spatial practices and knowledge, conducted by Maria — born on the island of Vitória (Espírito Santo, Brazil) and in residence on an island in New York City (USA). She engages in conversation with four women whose practices connect to the waters of the South, linking Brazil, Cape Verde, and Tobago through different languages: an interview with Sônia Rodrigues, a storytelling with Gabriela Leandro Pereira, a correspondence tracklist with Patti Anahory and a letter to NourbeSe Philip.
This work extends into sonic dimensions, with a sound piece in collaboration with Brazilian DJ Ramon Santos. The in≈sular assemblage tunes frequencies from one island to another, transmitting distinct soundscapes and exploring the particularities of each resonance in a deep dialogue across time and space. Embracing shared experiences with sound, archives, landscapes, family memories, and journeys, and inspired by Glissant's question about what kind of architecture our archipelago world needs, the two pieces seek out these invisible architectures where the waters shape not only space, but also techniques and ways of knowing.
