My project seeks to humanize the numbers of victims that are so often lost or ignored in statistics of gun violence in the United States. I have completed and installed a piece on Governors Island that allowed the public to not only see a visual representation of the 18,856 people estimated to have been killed with guns in the United States in 2023 but feel the number of deaths.
I installed a continuous chain of 18,856 spent and destroyed assault weapon bullet casings that stretched one half mile long on Governors Island. The public was invited to not only see the chain but hold the chain and walk its length allowing the casings to move through their hands feeling each of the 18,856 victims.
