CHUSAN, CHUSAN
Huirong Ye
2024 Fall Residency
Chusan, Chusan is an exploration of one name, two identities, a collection of found images, a myriad of correspondences (and the absence of them), and the infinite waters in between. Tracing a comparative history of a boat named after an island and an island whose name itself means “boat,” this project investigates how naming—a single act—can embody and perpetuate legacies of dominance and desire, examining dualities of rootedness versus mobility, anonymity versus renown, and provincialism versus the global reach of maritime power.
The project takes form as a publication, an installation, and two versions of lecture-performance presented on the ferry between Manhattan and Governors Island.
