BRINK
Dhruvi Rajpopat
2025 Spring Residency

ABOUT THE PROJECT
To address the multi-layered brink at which we stand as humans, Dhruvi Rajpopat’s work consists of a series of prototypes installed on the Governors Island ferry that bring users to a halt. This installation slows its user down: in intention, in process, and in the experience of rest. As humans hurtle into a future that feels as if it is arriving faster than we can handle, we need to let ourselves collapse, and take time to contemplate and reassess. For the New Yorker, states of retreat can be found in the spaces we occupy during our commute, resulting in oppositional psychological phenomena, and is illustrated in an accompanying film. The subway [the left retreat] is irreparable, unrecoverable, and terrifying. We become guarded, succumb to our internal monologues while being sensorially overstimulated, and relent to a light show of screens that shine bright messages at passengers. The ferry [the right retreat] turns the contemporary proletariat into a child, overcome with curiosity, naivety, and a primal nature– despite occupying public space. We open ourselves up, welcome rest, and loosen the white-knuckled grip on our individual lives. Brink calls for New Yorkers to let ourselves slip into the lullabies we can find, while we still can.
