Deli Radio at the Block House is presented through the Institute for Public Architecture as part of its current programmatic theme, Living Laboratory, a seasonal initiative that explores the intersection of public space, community, and experimentation. In this context, Deli Radio proposes a temporary communal site for transmission, one that does not solely engage with architecture as the design of physical structures or material forms, but rather as a means of constructing shared memory and everyday ritual.

Rooted in the ethos of the neighborhood corner store, Deli Radio draws on the pre-digital role of these sites and how radio functioned within them. Across cultures, corner stores continue to be key spaces for collective listening and gathering. Deli Radio builds on this legacy by considering the corner store as a space of both intimacy and spontaneous encounter, a place where you might hear a new sound while ordering something familiar.

Over two weeks, Deli Radio activated multiple spaces within the IPA’s Block House—including the garden, library, and kitchen—to host a series of recordings, broadcasts, and open gatherings. These programs explored the relational nature of music, architecture, food, and public space as overlapping forms of cultural practice that hold memory and shape our human experience. In collaboration with IPA Summer Fellow Chong Gu’s mobile and transformable structure CARRY, as well as structural botanic and edible interventions by Zacarías González, this programming series combined sound and spatial practice through temporary and agile activation.

Deli Radio and IPA invite participation from the broader public, welcoming proposals in a range of formats to be recorded, shared, and transmitted from Governors Island. Submit proposals directly at https://www.deliradio.nyc/

Tune in online for the rest of August to enjoy a series of broadcasts from Governors Island!
