Future Gardens:
Designing Living Ecosystems in Public Space
Roundtable Discussion
October 17
2:45pm
@ The Block House
Open to the Public

The Institute for Public Architecture and Urban Soils Institute present “Future Gardens” , a conversation that invites us to rethink the future of urban gardens and farms, and to imagine new systems for ecological remediation, engagement, and learning in our communities. This panel brings together projects across NYC that share a common starting point - finding and making space for growth in unexpected places.
As communities are increasingly cut off from land access, food systems, and the living ecologies around them – rebuilding those connections requires working across disciplines, species, and scales. The practitioners on this panel are approaching that question through different means and at different scales. Soil remediation and native ecosystem restoration. Composting infrastructure. Floating food forests. Rooftop farms. Artist-led food forests and neighborhood ecology curriculum. A kitchen reimagined as ecological architecture… What they share is a commitment to designing living systems, in public spaces, together.
This conversation will occur against the backdrop of Governors Island, where the Urban Soils Institute announces the upcoming launch of the People’s EcoSYSTEM project, a multi-institutional collaboration as part of the People’s Garden initiative.
Panelists:
Tatiana Morin, Director and Co-Founder, Urban Soils Institute
Zacarías González, artist and filmmaker; collaborator on the People's Garden and IPA Test Kitchen programs.
Mary Mattingly, artist and 2023 Guggenheim Fellow; creator of Swale and Floating Garden.
Moderated by Deborah Garcia, Residency Director and Curator, Institute for Public Architecture.
