ABOUT THE PROJECT
Echoes is a sound installation and an extended research on weatherproof spaces In New York.
In New York, pedestrians often find themselves sheltered from rain and sun under covered entrances, business extensions, shaded passageways, skyscraper arcades – typically, in forms of canopies and sidewalk sheds. Situated among legal, illegal, not illegal, and other varied conditions, they scatteredly connect the city like endless umbrellas - practically replicating Edward Bellamy’s imagined public space in his late 19th century novel ”Looking Backward“, a socialist dream that has not yet been realized.
Specifically, Echoes documents how soundscapes shift underneath continuous canopies in Chinatown, New York, captivating both familiarity and alienation. Installed in a domestic environment that is irrelevant to their collective histories, Echoes responded to the physicality of elevation and contemplated on the distance of travels.
