Research Assistant Program
Introduction
The Institute for Public Architecture (IPA) seeks a Research Assistant (RA) to assist with the IPA’s signature Residency Programs at the Block House on Governors Island in New York Harbor. The IPA’s Research Assistant program offers the opportunity to gain familiarity with the fields of architecture, urbanism and policy research, while developing hands-on experience in a dynamic non-profit design organization.
The RA will work closely with the Residency Manager to plan and facilitate programming, coordinate logistics for events, panels and exhibitions, and help with the daily operations of the Block House, the IPA’s headquarters in a landmarked building on the Island.
The RA will also have the opportunity to work directly with an international cohort of Fellows on their projects. This may include assisting Fellows with research documentation, developing diagrams or other visual representations to support their project, visiting sites of interest around New York City, or planning project exhibitions. Together with the Fellow cohort, the RA will engage with a variety of professionals and organizations related to architecture, urbanism, and policy.
We welcome applicants from the fields of design, architecture, urban planning, climate change adaptation, and those committed to the public realm in all disciplines. Experience in non-profit organizations and proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite is a plus.
The RA is expected to work in-person at the IPA’s facility on Governors Island at least a few days a week, including occasional weekend day-time events. The specific schedule will be established between the Residency Manager and RA. Since the internship is hybrid, applicants should be located in the New York City area during the Residency period. RAs receive free ferry access to Governors Island via the Battery Maritime Terminal in Manhattan.
